Pia: gone but not forgotten

I want everyone to stop griping about Pia.

In case you don't know, Pia was a 22-year-old contestant on American Idol who got kicked off last night.  She had a good voice, but for me, it wasn't like "DAYUM GIRL."  It was a little forced.  In fact, she kind of reminded me of Jessica Simpson -- not looks-wise, but voice wise.  Don't get me wrong.  She's a better singer.  But when she belts it's so forced that it hurts me to hear it.

So everyone went on a drug-fueled tyrade about Pia getting removed.  Celebs like Jennifer Hudson and Tom Hanks even commented on the whole fiasco!  But here's the thing: it is a blessing in disguise if you get kicked off idol and you're actually really good.  There's this curse that goes along with winning the competition -- the curse of having no career.  The only Idols that have actually gone anywhere?  Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.  The rest, eh.  Kris Allen did alright but now what is he doing?  More people remember the runner-up, Adam Lambert.  Jennifer Hudson herself was kicked off and went on to win a BAFTA, Oscar, Grammy, etc.  What the hell is Taylor Hicks doing lately (some viral vid with Jimmy Fallon)?  Ruben Studdard?  Fantasia Burrino (besides stealing men)?  I honestly can't remember any others.  Oh yeah, there's Lee DeWyze... who's doing what again?  Seriously.

By Pia being eliminated, she'll still get to go on the Idol Top 10 Tour, however, she won't be obligated to the strict contracts with American Idol --  i.e.) she won't have to record a hideous first single and sing it at the finale (aren't all of those just awful?)  and won't be subjected to all the Idol hoop-lah.   She'll have more creative freedom.  Has anyone heard of Daughtry (eliminated 4th and went on to sell a platinum selling album)?

Also, I'm not so sure that it wasn't Pia's time to go.  I mean, sure, Scotty, Jacob and Stefano need to peace out and should have gone before her, but when it comes down to it, I think that Haley and Lauren have a TON of talent, and are more likeable.  Yeah, Pia's a babe.  Yeah, she has a good voice.  But when I hear Lauren and Haley, I can't wait to download their singles.  I can't wait to see them the next week.  They just have a little 'oomph,' ya know?  So while I agree Pia is a good singer, I don't know if she has the Idol factor.

Sue me.
